Floyd Toole

(Master of Sound)

Dr. Floyd Toole has impressive business and academic credentials, having held the postion of Corporate Vice President – Acoustical Engineering at Harman International from 1991 until he retired in 2007 and Senior Research Officer in the Acoustics and Signal Processing Group at the National Research Council of Canada.

Dr. Toole’s research has focused on the acoustics and psychoacoustics of sound reproduction in small rooms, directed to improving engineering measurements, objectives for loudspeaker design and evaluation, and techniques for reducing variability at the loudspeaker / room / listener interface.

Most notably, he established methods for subjective and objective evaluations which have been used to clarify the relationships between technical measurements of loudspeakers and listeners’ perceptions.

Dr. Toole has published numerous papers in the journals of the AES and the Acoustical Society of America, chapters in two audio engineering handbooks, and many articles in consumer audio publications.

He is a member of the Acoustical Society of America, and a Fellow and past President of the Audio Engineering Society. In 1996 he was awarded the AES Silver Medal for “significant developments in the subjective and objective evaluation of audio devices”.

THE HOLY GRAIL

Floyd Toole has written the bible for home theatre enthusiasts called SOUND REPRODUCTION LOUDSPEAKERS AND ROOM, which is an amazing book that explains the physical and perceptual processes that are involved in sound reproduction and demonstrates how to use the processes to create high-quality listening experiences in stereo and multichannel formats.

Understanding the principles of sound production is necessary to achieve the goals of sound reproduction in spaces ranging from recording control rooms and home listening rooms to large cinemas.

This revision brings new science-based perspectives on the performance of loudspeakers, room acoustics, measurements and equalization, all of which need to be appropriately used to ensure the accurate delivery of music and movie sound tracks from creators to listeners

What is ISF, HAA Calibration & THX
ISF stands for Imaging Science Foundation, an organisation set up with the goal to provide individuals and corporations the opportunity for AV products to perform at the highest quality.
The ISF works with TV and projector manufacturers to develop and provide tools that produce professional-grade calibration.
Engineers are taught the basics of TV setup and trained to calibrate the equipment to deliver the best picture possible.

The ISF calibration procedure takes into account the lighting conditions, the layout of the room, and configuration of your TV to provide a truly personalised viewing experience. While the factory settings of your television may look acceptable to the untrained eye, ISF calibration will enhance the experience to display the perfect picture.

Calibration is necessary to ensure that content looks the same across the world. Due to changing technologies and advanced equipment, high-quality products like HDTV’s need to be calibrated backward to meet industry standards. Proper calibration means you see the content exactly as designed.

Consider these additional benefits of ISF calibration:
Receive the most accurate image and colour
Clear and crisp image
Greater longevity from your TV
Deeper colours
Full details in dark and bright images
Reduced eye strain

THX engineers perform over 400 hundred tests to ensure sound and picture reproduction in the industry’s top entertainment equipment is fully preserved. Only the very best products with uncompromising quality, performance, and consistency become THX Certified, making your next home entertainment purchase an easy decision.

WHAT IS THE HAA?

The Home Acoustics Alliance has developed the foremost course for Home Theater Acoustics design and performance. Whether you are seeking improvements in an existing system or building a new one, the course provides the framework and knowledge to practice acoustic design and calibration in the field.

The various "Elements" that outline this framework are reviewed by the acoustical calibrator and graded based upon how well they conform to industry standards. The calibrator then has the information necessary to "pro"scribe the required changes to bring performance up to its best.

The final analysis of performance is then summarized in a concise System Performance Report judging performance based upon our fundamental acoustical goals (see below). These goals are common to to all home sound systems. If your current AV Contractor is not HAA Certified, many consumers will hire an HAA Calibrator to review a proposed design as an outside consultant.
